The McSorley Name and its origins

The Gaelic spelling for McSorley is MacSomhairle.  It is a Norse name with the earliest recorded name of Ailin MacSomhairle.  Ailin born about 1183 was the second son of Somerlidasson King of Innesgall born about 1144 in Lorne, Argyleshire.  His grandfather was Somerled King of the Isles who was born in Morven, Argyleshire around 1113.

Mac” meaning son of and “Somerled” meaning summer wanderer.
