McSorley Family Crest

July 4, 2011

I’ve just come across a site that gives excellent information about the McSorley Family name, it’s origins in Scotland, and the crest /coat of arms associated with the McSorleys. Have a look at the site, there’s too much info for me to summarise here.  http://www.houseofnames.com/mcsorley-family-crest

The McSorley Name and its origins

February 21, 2011

The Gaelic spelling for McSorley is MacSomhairle.  It is a Norse name with the earliest recorded name of Ailin MacSomhairle.  Ailin born about 1183 was the second son of Somerlidasson King of Innesgall born about 1144 in Lorne, Argyleshire.  His grandfather was Somerled King of the Isles who was born in Morven, Argyleshire around 1113.

Mac” meaning son of and “Somerled” meaning summer wanderer.
